I am running
Win2000 or WinXP and AllTopo requests my serial number every time I start
the program.
Log in as Administrator (or equivalent), run AllTopo maps and enter the
serial number(s) one last time. If your system security is clamped down, the
AllTopo viewer can't register serial number changes.

How do I make a BigTopo?
Take the [ BigTopo ] tour.
-
Does All Topo Maps run on a Mac?
Yes, under bootcamp.
-
Can I download All Topo Maps to my Garmin(tm)
or Lowrance(tm) mapping GPS?
No, only maps from the manufacture's map program can be put in the GPS.
-
I can't find setup.exe file on Disks 2, 3, 4 ... OR Can't install disks 2, 3, 4 ...
The install program on disk 1 installs everything needed for all the data disks. When you ask AllTopo to display a map which is found on another disk it will prompt you to put the correct disk in your CD reader.
-
Installation hangs when it start to copy files
Copy the SETUP.EXE from the first data disk to a temporary location on your fixed drive. Run SETUP from the fixed disk.
If Norton Virus Checker is running, try disabling it during the installation.

I am printing, All Topo Maps indicates that the printout has been sent, but the printer never starts.
A. Typically the print driver fails because the image is just too big. Often, enabling 'Use High Definition Print Driver' in the All Topo Maps printer setup dialog 'File: Setup Printer, Map Scale' menu will result in a smaller print job. Ignore the warning, we have better success with it enabled on our large format printers.
B. Once an HP print driver fails, you may need to reboot your machine to print anything. We have found that we have to reboot after every failure.
C. Make sure you have the latest print drivers for your printer/plotter. If you have a large format HP printer make sure the print driver version is 4.40 or higher. Also especially true for HP 11 x 17 inch ink jet printers.
THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT - older drivers have memory problems.
D. If using the HP written HP-GL/2 driver for Windows select
"process in computer" under the ADVANCED tab. This will use your
computer memory to process the file rather than the HP DesignJet printer's
memory.
E. Make sure there is plenty of space on your fixed disk (typically C:) for the temporary files that your printer's driver needs to generate for the print job. Less than 300 Megabytes is cause for concern.
F. WinNT/2000/XT: Make sure your system has more than 300 megabytes of "Total Paging File Size for All Drives". (Check from 'Start: Settings: Control Panel: System: Virtual Memory: Change').
G. In your print driver, select 'Optimize for Graphics' if you have the choice.
H. Turn off any color compensation or profiles in the print driver.
I. Check the printer manufacturer's web page for additional 'Out of Memory'
clues.

I am making a BigTopo and it fails when:
A. I press the 'Make BigTopo' button: The image size is limited to 250 Megabytes on Win95/Win98 machines. Make a smaller image.
B. BigTopo tries to write the output file: The path you have selected for the output file does not exist OR the filename contains an illegal character.

The GPS tool won't let me select COM1 which is where the GPS is plugged into!
If you have a PDA (like a Palm Pilot) then it's synchronizing tool may be running (looking for the PDA in the cradle.) Find the PDA's tool in the icon tray (bottom right side of the Start menu), right-click on it and select Exit.
Does another application have the port open?

I want to install the map data on my fixed drive.
Checkout [ Moving maps to fixed drive ].
-
How much disk space and ram space do I need?
Checkout [ System Requirements ].
-
The installation of Disk One went well but I can not install Disks Two, Three or Four.
The Disk 1 installation program (setup.exe) installs all of the database and index files required for all of the disks. Remember that the map data remains on the CD's until you view a map.
-
I want seamless maps! The maps are tilted! The scanned images look damaged!
Seamed Maps: Checkout [ BigTopo ]
Tilted Maps: The paper quadrangles are projected to Lat/Lon space. The digital files that All Topo Maps are based upon are rubber-sheet transformed to equal-area UTM orthogonal space. This makes All Topo Maps perfect for engineering use and provides a constant scale over large area so BigTopo can make huge maps.
The maps are scanned at high resolution, untilted and then skewed on purpose.
-
II want to enter a Lat/Lon pair or UTM location and jump to the map at that spot.
Use the 'Find Loc' button to display the coordinate finder, enter the target coordinate in D M S, D M.m, D.d or UTM.
-
When I double click in a map collar, the next map is displayed but has a cryptic '<.' annotation near the edge.
The cryptic map note is the exact spot where you double clicked to change to a new map. It might help you figure out where you came from, you can turn it off by hiding the waypoints or select 'Annotations: Clear System Annotations' to remove it.
-
What does '1,303 Mt.' mean?
1,303 Meters. Feet are abbreviated 'Ft.' and Miles are abbreviated as 'Mi.'.
-
I don't like the way the Waypoint Editor is displayed every time I add a waypoint (F2).
No problem, use the F7 which records a coordinate just like the last one, without showing the waypoint editor.
-
Where is the elevation displayed?
Elevation is printed on the map. 'All Topo Maps' does not include a DEM (Digital Elevation Model) so you have to read the elevation off of the map and interpolate between the lines.
If you really need this capability, check out the other topographical map programs. But be careful, they may not be very accurate. The elevations printed on the quads are very accurate.
-
I know that there is a place called 'XYZYX' in this state, and can not believe that it is not in the database!
It most likely is in the database, but has another word preceding it, or is listed as two words not one.
Use the 'Advanced Search' to look for every place with "xyz" in it's name.
-
There are places in the database that are not on the map!
Yes, the database includes many feature names from other maps and sources.
-
The map does not show a new road or feature!
Typically, the quads are the best source of trail and remote feature information. But they may not be the best source for road or urban information, use one of the other great road mapping products.
The 7 1/2 minute quads are only updated every once in a while. The included maps are the latest maps available. Press the 'End' key to move to the bottom right map collar, then check the map's revision date. (The map may not have been revised for 20 years.)
-
When I print, the colors take forever to print, or these maps cost a fortune to print!
The map colors have been chosen to faithfully reproduce those used on the paper maps.
Use 'Setup Printer', 'Properties' to inspect the options for your printer. Many color printers allow you to select 'Gray Scale' or 'Poor/Medium Quality' from the Windows print driver options.
Typically printing in Black and White is much less expensive that the full color printouts.
Purchase printer with separate tanks for Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black inks. This allows you to use ALL the ink of each color. We use and recommend the HP2000.

I want to use the AllTopo program at my office and have copied all of the data files from the CD to a network directory. The program says it won't run off the network.
The data source needs to be on the local client machine.
-
Can I make copies of the CD ROM disks?
Just ONE, but you can't use it! You can legally make a single copy of each of the CD ROM disks for backup purposes. If you don't have a CD-ROM writer, iGage will exchange your damaged disk for a nominal charge.
-
Can I use the program disks on more than one machine?
Not legally. Again, the license is good only on a single machine, even if there is no way anyone might use the product on another machine. Hopefully All Topo Maps are reasonably priced and you will purchase a copy for every machine that they are run on.
-
I originally installed a BETA, or Not For Resale version of All Topo Maps (or I installed a friends copy on my machine, but have since purchased my own copy of All Topo Maps). I want to change the old Serial Number to my new Serial Number.
Click'' Help: About All Topo Maps'. Look for the Serial Number displayed at the top of the form and double click on the serial number. Read the message and press OK. Exit All Topo Maps, restart All Topo Maps and enter your new serial number when prompted.
Again, thank you for purchasing your copy of All Topo Maps!
-
Why are you (iGage) so worried about counting program copies?
iGage in contractually bound to pay royalties for each disposition of the 'All Topo Map' software. This includes every copy: updates, improvements, enhancements replacements...
-
If 'All Topo Maps' just did ____ it would be perfect for our application. Can you add this feature?
Certainly! Send your request to 'maps@igage.com' and we will let you know when and how much.
-
The Help File is missing. The Find By Place/Feature Name database does not work. I get an error with 'BDE' or 'Borland Database Engine' in the description.
Re-install the software from Disk 1, don't uninstall first-just install over the failed installation.
-
I have inserted the requested disk, press OK but All Topo Maps can not find the data files!
The drive box has the wrong drive letter for your CD ROM. Before you press OK, make sure that the appropriate drive letter is selected in the 'Alternate Data Location' box.
